Unlocking Opportunities for Law Students and Young Lawyers
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) presents the 2024 Judicial Fellowship Programme, a unique opportunity for law students and young lawyers to engage with the Court’s judges. The fellowship aims to enhance participants’ practical understanding of public international law and the Court’s procedures by actively involving them in its activities.
Legacy of the University Traineeship Programme
Established in 1999 as the University Traineeship Programme, the ICJ Judicial Fellowship Programme provides recent law graduates with a platform to gain professional experience within the International Court of Justice. Over the ten-month fellowship, participants can anticipate engaging in research, drafting memorandums, attending hearings, and performing duties assigned by their respective judges.
Valuable Experience Under the Supervision of Court Members
Judicial Fellows will work on a full-time basis, closely supervised by a Member of the Court, alongside the Member’s primary legal assistant. Their responsibilities include conducting research, drafting memorandums on legal or factual questions, and actively participating in the Court’s proceedings.
Trust Fund Awards and Eligibility Criteria
The programme offers trust fund awards designed to benefit candidates nominated by universities in developing countries that lack the means to provide financial sponsorship. To be eligible, candidates must be 31 years old or younger at the start of the fellowship, demonstrate excellent results in legal studies, and exhibit a keen interest in public international law.
Application Process and Deadline
Interested candidates should follow a university nomination process, with universities encouraged to propose more than one nominee. The deadline for applications is February 5, 2024. The Court expects to finalize candidate selection by April 2024.
Required Documents for Application
To apply, candidates need an official letter of nomination from their university, letters of reference, an official academic record, and a writing sample.
