The Leiden University Excellence Scholarships are available to outstanding non-EEA/non-EFTA students who are enrolling in a full-time Master’s degree program at Leiden University.
We aspire for our graduates to evolve into academic professionals and actively engaged global citizens who actively contribute to addressing the societal challenges we face. Achieving this goal necessitates a curriculum that places a strong emphasis on research-driven teaching.

Scholarship Details:
The scholarship is designed to support exceptional students from non-EEA/non-EFTA regions who aspire to pursue a Master’s degree program at Leiden University. It is granted for the entire duration of the study program.
Scholarship Requirements:
To be eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarships, the following criteria must be met:
1. Academic Excellence: Applicants should have demonstrated outstanding academic performance in their previous study program(s), which should be relevant to the Master’s program they are applying for. As a guideline, the applicant should rank within the top 10% of graduates from their previous study program. It’s important to note that proof of ranking is not mandatory; this information serves only as an indication of the level of competitiveness.
2. Nationality Requirement: Applicants must possess a passport from a non-EEA/non-EFTA* country and should not be eligible for student financial support from the Dutch government (Studiefinanciering), with the exception of students applying for the following programs, which do not have nationality restrictions:
•All LLM Advanced Studies programs.
•MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.
Scholarship Duration and Reward:
The LExS is awarded for the duration of the study programme. There are three available levels of awards:
€ 10,000 of the tuition fee
€ 15,000 of the tuition fee
Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
