ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION “CHANGING THE TIDE” MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2024
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University is elated to declare, in collaboration with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a limited assortment of comprehensive scholarships tailored for Masters students pursuing the full thesis track. These scholarships encompass various disciplines inherent to our Faculty, yet with a focus on research pursuits encapsulated within the scope of the following thematic domains:
- African Cultural Studies
- The Anthropocene and/or Ecocriticism
- Identity, Gender, and/or Queer Studies

VALUE OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS
Master’s scholarships: R170 000, disbursed over a span of 18 months to two years. Furthermore, scholars have the opportunity to petition for the following categories of auxiliary assistance in tandem with their academic mentors:
- Immersive Writing Retreat – R 2 205
- Attendance at Local Conferences – R 8 269
- Funding for Publication Costs – R 10 920
ELIGIBLE COUNTRIES: Nations across the African Continent
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Aspiring candidates are required to have garnered a first-rate distinction (75% and above) in the conclusive year of their Honours degree. Applicants are also anticipated to furnish a specimen of their composition alongside their application:
- Honours-level research treatise for Master’s aspirants
- Any published scholarly articles pertinent to the thematic orientation of the application
At the time of application, candidates should not surpass the age of 30 in order to be eligible for a Masters scholarship. Moreover, candidates must be primed to commence their academic undertakings in February 2024. In addition to seeking the scholarship, candidates must formally apply for admission to Stellenbosch University. While registration or securing a mentor is not compulsory, candidates are advised to acquaint themselves with potential mentors whose expertise aligns with their chosen field of study within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences before formally submitting an application.

- Pertinent vocational or artistic background
APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND STIPULATIONS:
- Initiate the application process at Stellenbosch University
- Complete the official scholarship application dossier
- Deliver a motivational statement (with a stipulation of not exceeding 600 words)
- Furnish a preliminary proposal (or conceptual framework) encompassing no more than 500 words, elucidating the intended research inquiry and conceptual framework underpinning any of the three project themes. (African Cultural Studies; The Anthropocene and/or Ecocriticism; Identity, Gender, and/or Queer studies). Within this document, the candidate should expound upon the scholarly contributions their research will contribute to the current repository of knowledge within this realm of academic pursuit. Additional elements to be included are the enunciation of the problem statement, the envisaged methodology / theoretical structure / philosophical bedrock to be employed, and the feasibility of the study.
- It is important to underscore that the research must be directly linked to one of the three outlined project themes.
- A notarized duplicate of the complete academic transcript
- A notarized duplicate of the Honours degree – or its international counterpart (in cases where the qualification has been fulfilled but the official document has yet to be conferred, an official verification from the respective institution indicating the impending issuance before December 2023)
- A certified duplicate of the South African identification document or passport (relevant to international applicants).
