The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) Scholarship Programme stands as an exceptional opportunity for early career researchers in Africa, offering a platform to advance their ongoing research at the Nordic Africa Institute. This scholarship provides access to the Institute’s library, mentorship from the Institute’s researchers, networking opportunities, and other resources to foster a dynamic research environment. The NAI aims to contribute to knowledge production about Africa, fostering capacity building and nurturing relationships between African and Nordic research communities.

Value & Duration of Award:
- Return airfare (economy class)
- Accommodation
- Subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approx. 40 USD) per day
- Installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 250 USD)
- Access to workspace, including a desk computer, in a shared office at the Institute
- Subsistence allowance for days spent in Uppsala
Research Environment
The Institute’s library, specializing in contemporary African literature with a focus on Social Sciences, enriches the research experience. Guest Researchers also enjoy access to Uppsala University Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Moreover, they can present their research at the Nordic Africa Institute and visit other institutions in the Nordic countries.
Eligibility
The programme welcomes two main categories of early career researchers:
- Staff full-time employed by an African-based university or research center enrolled in a doctoral program in the African region without access to international scholarships.
- Postdoctoral researchers within 5 years or less of PhD completion.
Application Process
Interested candidates can apply via the official website. The application requires the following documents:
- Up-to-date CV, including a list of publications (with available online links)
- Outline of research project (5 pages)
- Work plan (1 page) specific to the time spent at the Institute
- Reference: A signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or another senior scholar in the same field, confirming the current workplace/affiliation and field of research.
